Bob Hyde can be a difference-maker on the School Board

Service clubs and other like-minded organizations here are looking right now at a long list of additional educational programs and activities beyond the basic classroom that Anacortes teachers hope can be funded outside the basic classroom curricula.

The list is impressive in terms of the benefits you envision for students: a program for at-risk readers, a robotics competition at the high school, intervention for struggling math students, a starter trumpet and trombone for a band program, class sets of books for second-graders.

The list of requests, $46,000 in all, is also a sobering reminder of how strapped our schools are for cash and how much work needs to be done to keep the quality of education here improving in the midst of declining enrollment and reduced state funding.

As the race to fill a vacant Anacortes School Board seat comes to a close, we think the best candidate will be the one who can work toward different models, new and expanded partnerships and stronger community connections.

We are fortunate to have two high-caliber candidates in Bob Hyde, Port of Anacortes executive director, and Karl Yost, environmental services manager for a construction company. Either man would add skills and talent to what is already a strong board. Both have a passion for education and are ready to roll up their sleeves.

Who has the vision? Who can bring the education community and the community at large together and make things happen? Who has the organizational management skills to help the district do more with less while inspiring school leaders and staff?

Tough questions, but the district is in a tough spot, and the challenges won’t go away. The School Board election is a chance to add a difference maker.

We think Bob Hyde can be that difference-maker. His work at the port has been first-rate. We can see him in the forefront as the Anacortes School District moves in some new and exciting directions and builds on the quality education it already delivers.

REFINERY OPERATOR Tesoro is currently seeking to fill the position of Refinery Operator at its Anacortes facility. An Operator monitors and controls refinery process equipment while working a rotating 12-hour shift, often outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. This can be a physically/mentally challenging job requiring mechanical ability and a basic understanding of physical sciences and chemistry. In addition, candidates must possess a positive work ethic, good communications and teamworking skills and have the willingness to take personal responsibility for the safety of themselves and others.
