A strong group of Tigers will take to the field this spring with state success again on the atheltes’ minds.
Nearly the entire girls’ team returns this season, which combined with a number of talented boys’ competitors, could make Burlington-Edison one of the top schools in the state.
The Tigers’ state champion 4x100 relay team (Sarah Berentson, Alicia Shapiro, Danielle Nordlund and Chelsea Genther) will be back in its entirety to lead the girls. Joining those four will be returnees Katie Griffith (sprinter), Emily Bylin (jumps), Anne Barnett (throws), Callie Reff (jumps), Chasina Olis and Teira Graham (throws), along with many others.
Newcomers for the squad include Ali Dowling (distance), Nicole Arndt and Erica Chapman (sprints/hurdles).
“Jumps are going to be very good, along with throwing events,” Tigers’ coach Kevin Gudgel said. “All three relay events will be strong for us.”
For the boys, the sprinting and distance events will again be the team’s strong point, Gudgel said.
Josh Simpson, Milan Drake, Conner Whan and Patrick Spilsbury will shore up the team’s distance events. Jeff Adams (hurdles), Luke Thomas (sprints) and Achilles Wynn (sprints/jumps) all hope to return to state this year.
Both the boys’ and girls’ teams placed second at state last year.
“We should be pretty strong at everything this year,” Gudgel said.
