La Conner volleyball players celebrate after taking fourth place Saturday at the Class 2B state tournament.

YAKIMA — Sure, the La Conner volleyball team would have rather returned home with a first-place trophy. But the squad is content to come back to the Skagit Valley with fourth-place hardware from the Class 2B state tournament.

“We are more than pleased to be coming home as the fourth-place team,” La Conner coach Suzanne Marble said. “We are leaving the state tournament with a record of 3-1 and that is nothing to be ashamed of.

“These girls have worked so hard this year. They have really given it their all.”

The Braves returned to championship form against Kittitas as La Conner swept the Coyotes 25-19, 25-11, 25-10 in the fourth-place match Saturday.

“We just wanted to come out strong,” said La Conner middle hitter Julie Hulbert. “All season, it’s always been never give up. Keep playing hard.”

La Conner reached the fourth-place match after defeating Adna in four games, 25-21, 16-25, 25-21, 25-19 earlier Saturday.

The championship day began with a 25-13, 25-13, 25-19 loss to Colfax.

Against Kittitas, La Conner overwhelmed by the Coyotes from the outset.

“We just didn’t let up,” Marble said. “It was complete domination.”

In particular, Candice Pedroza, Hulbert and Abi Hedlund never allowed the pressure to diminish. Pedroza ended the match with 25 assists and three aces. Hulbert had 12 kills and four blocks while Hedlund added seven kills and six aces.
