FRIDAY HARBOR — A 21-year-old Friday Harbor man was charged with second-degree murder Monday in the fatal shooting of his 22-year-old brother.
Jawaad Reaves and his older brother Jermaine Reaves, who lived together in the Harborview Apartments, had been fighting. The fight ended with Jermaine Reaves being shot in the chest with a shotgun, according to San Juan Superior Court charging documents.
Their mother, a witness, said the dispute began about 2:30 a.m Sept. 28. The argument quickly became physical — Jermaine Reaves punched Jawaad Reaves in the mouth, and the two wrestled throughout the apartment.
The brothers were separated by a friend, and Jawaad Reaves went to his room. When his mother heard the sound of Jawaad loading his shotgun, she tried to calm him, court documents say.
After pounding on the door, Jermaine Reaves entered the room through a connected bathroom and closet. Jawaad Reaves shot him, the documents say.
Jermaine Reaves was flown to St. Joseph Hospital in Bellingham, where he died.
Inside the walk-in closet, was a 20 gauge single-barrel shotgun, with an expended No. 6 shot casing, the court documents say.
