A committee tasked with studying the city of Burlington’s traffic impact fee structure will likely recommend a reduction at Thursday’s City Council work session.
Currently, the city charges developers nearly $4,000 per car trip they create that adds to traffic capacity in Burlington during peak hours — from 4 to 6 p.m.
The committee is suggesting that number be reduced to $3,633 to take some of the sting away from developers. Before the Council hiked the traffic impact fees in April, developers were paying less than $400 per trip, Burlington Public Works Director Chal Martin said.
The new traffic impact fee would still be able to alleviate the city’s planned transportation projects, which could cost about $55 million over the next 22 years. Additional development is projected to generate about 8,000 additional car trips per year, according to projections.
“That figure would be enough to fund the capacity improvement projects,” Martin said.
The current impact fee can be changed by the City Council at any time.
The work session will take place at 6 p.m. tomorrow at city hall. The City Council meeting will take place at 7 p.m.
