BURLINGTON — Police continued Monday to piece together events that may have led to the shooting death of a Skagit County man, in hopes of identifying the person who killed him.
Walter Villanueva was driving in the 700 block of South Alder Street after midnight Thursday when a shotgun blast smashed through the driver’s side window of his vehicle, striking him in the head, police said.
The 34-year-old man died several hours later on Friday, officers said. Villanueva’s death is the first known homicide in the 8,400-resident city since 2000, according to police department records.
Detectives spent the weekend and Monday looking into a possible connection between the shooting and a fight earlier that night at El Gitano, a restaurant on Riverside Drive in Mount Vernon, said Burlington police Detective Sgt. Scott Butler.
“We’re investigating an altercation in Mount Vernon, and we think this might be stemming from that, but we haven’t proved it yet,” Butler said.
