ANACORTES — The price of campsites and other services offered by the state parks system will rise system-wide by 3 percent, starting next July, to generate an additional $1 million.

The state Parks and Recreation Commission voted Thursday morning to increase camping fees and other prices in the state parks system.

Fees account for 27 percent of state parks operating budget, said Ilene Frisch, parks budget director. The increase will mean that camping sites will rise $1 from the current price of $12 to $32 a night, generating an additional $394,000 a year. Other fees include rental of pavilions and picnic areas for weddings or family reunions.

Park officials say they need the additional money to cover a rise in the costs associated with providing services. In general, the 3 percent fee increase is across the board; however, some minimum prices will remain the same, parks officials said. Parks visitors reserving camping sites online will receive a discount.

The new fee structure could be in place for the next biennium; however, the commission could review it before 2011.
