A number of elected positions will be contested this year in Anacortes and those who are contemplating running for mayor, City Council, school board, port commission, hospital board or pool board have to make up their minds soon — candidates can begin filing by mail on Monday. Results will be decided in the Aug. 18 primary and Nov. 3 general elections.
Filing forms are available from the Skagit County Auditor’s Elections Office. They may be picked up in person at Administration Building Room 201, 700 S. Second St., Mount Vernon, or can be requested by phoning (360) 336-9305. Information on public disclosure requirements is also available from that office.
Completed forms may be mailed to the Elections Office, P.O. Box 1306, 700 S. Second St., Mount Vernon, WA 98273. Mailed forms must be postmarked no sooner than May 18 and no later than June 5.
Candidates may also file in person at the Elections Office 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 1-5.
To be eligible, candidates must be registered to vote in the same district as the desired office.
Up for election this year are Mayor Dean Maxwell and four City Council members: Position 4, held by Brian Geer; Position 5, Cynthia Richardson; Position 6, Bill Turner; and Position 7, Erica Pickett.
Anacortes School District has two directors up for election: Position 1, held by Mitch Everton; and Position 2, Kris Lytton. Meetings are 6:15 p.m. second and fourth Thursdays.
Two Hospital District #2 (Island Hospital) commission positions are up for election this year: Position 2, now held by C.W. “Buzz” Ely, and Position 3, held by Paul Maughan. Both say they intend to run for re-election.
Three Port of Anacortes commissioner positions are up for election: District 1, held by Ray Niver; District 2, Bill Short; and District 5, Keith Rubin.
Two Fidalgo Pool and Fitness Center commissioner spots will be contested: Position 3, now held by Pam Lambeth, and Position 5, Andrew Olson
