The South Fidalgo Community Council is seeking candidates for three positions up for election this fall.

Harold Harrington, Jan Hersey and Leigh Sawyer were voted in for two-year terms in 2007 when the council was established.

Four other members, Chair Tom Carson, Robert Atterberry, David Pearson and Cyndi Walters, were voted in for four-year terms.

Those elected in the fall will also serve four-year terms.

Residents interested in providing a voice for the unincorporated area of Fidalgo Island, playing a vital role in fostering community and preserving the character of the community are being sought.

Candidates must be registered to vote in one of three precincts — Fidalgo, Dewey Beach, or Rosario.

Mail-in ballots will be due sometime in the fall; the exact dates will be announced after they are approved by the council.

The council, which represents the unincorporated areas of Fidalgo Island, is hosting a community dinner at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 22 at the Dewey Beach Fire Hall to discuss its work, solicit ideas and answer questions.

The meeting will be followed at 7 p.m. by a community fundraising dinner to help raise money to hold the fall election. Tax deductible contributions may be sent to South Fidalgo Community Council, Box 23, Anacortes, WA 98221. Everyone is welcome.

The council’s initial focus involved developing a plan of work for the newly formed organization and beginning to develop a sub-area plan for South Fidalgo.

Other activities included working with Washington State Department of Transportation on the Highway 20 upgrade across South Fidalgo, representing the community’s concerns at numerous county committee meetings and hearings, and hosting speakers on topics of interest to the area.

Much work remains to be done on environmental studies and providing opportunities to develop a greater sense of community, according to the South Fidalgo council.

Declaration of candidacy forms are available at the organizations Web site, http://www.southfidalgo.org.

Completed forms should be postmarked no later than Friday, July 31 and mailed to South Fidalgo Community Council Election, Box 1168, Anacortes, WA, 98221.
