Two powerhouse Northwest blues outfits and a genre-crossing indie band from San Francisco top the field this week.
Mission District veterans Mark Matos and Os Beaches perform at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Brown Lantern. They offer psych-pop songs with a melancholy country twang, that address love and leaving, loss and revolution and drunken, broken, undying hope.
This muted optimism is expressed in inventive song structures and phrasing that can turn left or right, with pedal steel guitar, Hammond B-3 and ghostly vocal harmonies, as well as Matos’ honest, unaffected lead vocals.
The young band, a collection of regulars of the City by the Bay’s bars, stages and alleys, promises a window into the Renaissance of independent, genre-spanning music happening in San Francisco right now.
Those who prefer rollicking blues can hear Son Jack Jr. and Michael Wilde on Friday or Kim Field and the Might Titans of Tone Saturday at the Rockfish Grill.
With Delta Hothouse, Son Jack Jr. won best traditional blues honors this year from the Washington Blues Society, and he and Michael Wilde shared a win in the best solo/dues category. Son Jack Jr. was nominated in best writer, best songwriter, best acoustic guitar and best new band categories. The pair are still working their way to the 2010 International Blues Challenge.
Son Jack Jr. has played with legends such as David “Honeyboy” Edwards, Louisiana Red and John Cephas, and has appeared with about every major Pacific Northwest act. His live shows are described as “intoxicating, intense, exciting experiences.”
Kim Field and the Mighty Titans of Tone return triumphantly to A-Town to follow up a dynamic Anacortes Jazz & Blues Festival performance last month that made the crowd jump to its feet and roar.
Field has been billed with such rhythm and blues legends as Muddy Waters, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robert Cray, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Gregg Allman, James Cotton, Otis Rush, John Lee Hooker, Albert Collins, the Righteous Brothers, Walter Horton, and Big Mama Thornton. He is joined by the Mighty Titans of Tone, an all-star quartet of premier Northwest musicians.
