Attendees are encouraged to bring a picnic and watch Mayor Dean Maxwell and Parks and Recreation Director Gary Robinson cut the grand opening ribbon at the 29th Street Community Garden at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Refreshments and tours of the garden will be available.
The garden, behind San Juan Lanes between 28th and 29th streets, provides plots for people who don’t have space for their own gardens.
It also includes children’s gardens, demonstration areas and a food bank plot where vegetables will be grown specifically for area food banks.
All the plots this year are spoken for and several people have started planting.
The community garden on city-owned land came together through efforts by the city, Skagit Beat the Heat, volunteers who prepared two dozen plots for planting, built a storage shed and put in water lines and contributions from area businesses, Skagit County and Soroptimists International of Anacortes.
People are asked to bike, walk or carpool to the opening if possible because of limited parking.
