Museum honors volunteers
School tour docent Patsy Love of La Conner received the Volunteer of the Year Award in June from the Skagit County Historical Museum.
Museum Curator of Education Janet Oakley said Love has made the museum tour an enjoyable and educational experience for elementary and preschool students.
Love has served at the museum since 2001. She is retired from the University of Washington academic staff and is the author of “Take a Crab to Lunch, A Cookbook for Kids.”
Volunteers honored
Area volunteers Ed Burke and Lily Glassmeyer were honored in May during the 34th annual Skagit Retired and Senior Volunteer Program Recognition Luncheon at McIntyre Hall in Mount Vernon.
Burke was honored for 30 years of volunteer service, and Glassmeyer for 25 years. Thirteen other volunteers were recognized for 20 years of service in the community.
RSVP volunteers logged approximately 122,000 hours of volunteer time at 90 area agencies in 2007. About 20 of Skagit RSVP’s active volunteers are 90 years and older.
Dairy industry selects ambassadors
Trisha Dykstra, 19, and Adrienne Schoenbachler, 18, were selected as co-alternate State Dairy Ambassadors during the 53rd annual Washington State Dairy Ambassador gala event on June 28 in Lynnwood.
Dykstra is the daughter of Andrew and Sandra Dykstra of Burlington. She represented the dairy industry’s Skagit and Island counties.
Schoenbachler, representing Snohomish County, is the daughter of Fred and Tammi Schoenbachler of Stanwood.
Thurston County’s dairy ambassador, Eryn Edwards, was selected as the 53rd Washington State Dairy Ambassador. Edwards, 18, is the daughter of Jeff Peltier and Zena Edwards of Olympia.
Edwards, Dykstra and Schoenbachler will represent the Dairy Farmers of Washington State during appearances at schools, businesses, civic organizations and the media.

Grant supports One Book program
The Mount Vernon City Library received a $7,000 Library Services and Information Act grant from the State Library division of the Office of the Secretary of State of Washington. The funding will support the One Book program in Mount Vernon, entitled “The Power of One” and based on the children’s picture book, “Alex and the Amazing Lemonade Stand.”
Children and families in Mount Vernon and across Skagit County will read the book and participate in related public events at the library, several Mount Vernon schools and the Lincoln Theatre. The public events, including a visit from the author, are expected to take place in March 2009. Grant project partners include the other public libraries in Skagit County, the Mount Vernon School District, the Children’s Museum of Skagit County, Skagit County Community Action Agency, the Lincoln Theatre and the Skagit Valley Herald.
Horseman recognized for activities
Al Morgan of Sedro-Woolley was honored in June for logging 100 hours in the American Quarter Horse Association Horseback Riding Program.
The program recognizes and rewards AQHA members for time spent with American quarter horses in activities such as trail rides, working cattle, pleasure driving and simply riding. Awards are presented at 100- to 5,000-hour levels and range from merchandise gift certificates to a trophy belt buckle at the highest level.
Other donations received
n The Mt. Baker Chapter of the American Red Cross raised about $30,000 at its 14th annual charity golf tournament June 20 at Shuksan Golf Club. Some of the proceeds came from the Chapter’s first ever Golf Ball Drop, in which prenumbered golf balls were dropped from a manlift 130 feet above three holes on a green. Participants who had bought the numbered balls that entered the holes won the prize for that hole — a cash prize of 25 percent of the ball sales, a trip to Las Vegas or a 2008 Porsche Cayman for a weekend. All proceeds of the charity event directly support services provided by the Mt. Baker Chapter.
n Stanwood’s Harvest Jubilee Committee received a Friends of Farms donation from the Stillaguamish Grange for the 2008 Harvest Jubilee-Stanwood/Camano/Silvana Farm Tour scheduled for this fall. The annual event showcases the community’s agricultural heritage, local produce and other agricultural products.
