* Governor's committee asks for more time to submit report
The Department of Corrections says there was no indication that Isaac Lee Zamora posed a risk for violent crime before his arrest on Sept. 2 and that his case received a lot of attention in the weeks before his arrest.
The 28-year-old Alger man was arrested that day following a violent spree that left six people dead and four wounded. He had previously spent time in Corrections custody after a May conviction for cocaine possession.
The Corrections Department finished its investigation of the handling of the slaying suspect and submitted a draft report to DOC Secretary Eldon Vail.
Deputy Director Dan Pacholke said that information would also be used internally to evaluate the department’s involvement. Pacholke said one indication that Zamora was not considered high-risk during his custody was that he was sent to the Okanogan County Jail, which rarely takes high-risk inmates.
The Corrections Department conducted a risk and needs assessment on Zamora just before he was released in August from the Okanogan County Jail. Since his release, Zamora met with a community corrections officer three times, Pacholke said.
“When I look at it from a case management standpoint, it looks like a lot of work in three weeks,” Pacholke said.
Given that Zamora was released from a county jail instead of prison, his case manager was very on top of the case and gave it a lot of attention, Pacholke said.
Meanwhile, the committee the governor formed to examine Zamora’s criminal and mental health history and his handling asked today for another extension before filing a report.
Gov. Chris Gregoire set up the panel on Sept. 4 to do the study after Zamora’s arrest and asked that it report back within 10 days.
But this is the second time the committee has asked for an extension. A spokesperson from the governor’s office said the committee needed another document before submitting its report.
Meanwhile, Vail may submit to the committee the Corrections Department report he’s been given, or he may ask for more information.
