ANACORTES — Estimated repair costs for the Tommy Thompson Parkway trestle are higher than originally expected. Engineers now say it could cost as much as $500,000 to fix the fire-damaged span.
Eric Shjarback, assistant city engineer, said they’re looking at the lowest cost possible. The cost is higher than the original $300,000 estimate now that details are being worked out.
The $400,000 to $500,000 cost range depends on what kind of environmental mitigation is required, Shjarback said.
He said the project should continue to move along.
“Within a month we’ll have a really good handle on timing,” he said. “It’s not a really big, big project.”
Fundraising efforts to help pay for the fix are starting to kick into gear.
So far, about $6,300 in donations have been collected.
Buttons are going to be available for donations around town soon.
The Anacortes Parks Foundation is accepting donations to help rebuild the trestle, which was seriously damaged in a dramatic fire Oct. 15. Contributions are tax deductible through its 501(c)3 status. Send donations to P.O. Box 1902, Anacortes, WA 98221. For more information contact Michele Pope at 293-7837 or .
Anacortes’ Iron Cupcake will raise funds to support the trestle at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14 at Randy’s Pier 61, 209 T Ave. Tasting is $2 per person, which will be donated. Visit http://www.alteredrecipes.com.
The city and Samish Indian Nation are committed to repairing the trestle and say they hope to have it reopened by April 2010.
The cause of the suspicious fire is still undetermined, but Anacortes Police are investigating it as arson.
The Anacortes Parks Foundation is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the person(s) responsible for the fire. Anyone with information is asked to call the Anacortes Police Department tip line at 299-1985.

$500 bucks may sound like a lot of money to some, and indeed it is, but if you really want to catch an arson by word of mouth you may want to make it… Posted November 28, 2009 - 09:10 AM by Tim Nelson |
