SPOKANE — State wildlife officials are searching for a cougar that reportedly attacked a child Wednesday in Stevens County.

A 5-year-old Canadian boy’s parents reported that he was attacked and injured while hiking with his family on the Abercrombie Mountain Trail, along Silver Creek in the Colville National Forest east of Northport, according to a press release from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The parents, of Rossland, B.C., reported that a cougar jumped out of a brushy area and attacked the boy. The child’s mother, who was nearby, fought off the cougar, according to the press release. The parents took the child to a hospital in Trail, B.C., about 25 miles away. They said their son was treated for head wounds and released.

Wildlife officers contacted local hunters with hounds trained to tree cougars, to assist in searching for the cougar. If the animal is found, it will be killed.

“When human life is threatened in this way, we take no chances,” Regional Enforcement Capt. Mike Whorton said in the news release.

The last cougar attack in Washington was last year in Douglas County, according to Fish and Wildlife.
