BURLINGTON — A young couple was arrested Saturday morning after a verbal confrontation over an eviction notice on Whitmarsh Road turned into an assault with a knife and then a shovel and a car.

A 30-year-old Burlington man was struck in the head with the shovel and taken to the hospital for stitches, police said.

A 20-year-old Burlington man was being held in the Skagit County Jail on investigation of first-degree assault. His girlfriend, a 19-year-old Burlington woman, was arrested on investigation of fourth-degree assault.

The incident, which was reported around 9:56 a.m. Saturday, began when the manager of a mobile home park and a female tenant walked to the couple’s unit to evict them, police said.

During the ensuing argument, the boyfriend brandished a butcher knife at a fourth tenant, the 30-year-old, who told police he walked over because he heard shouting, officers said. The 20-year-old was convinced to drop the knife, but then he grabbed a shovel, striking the 30-year-old as he walked away, police said.

The 20-year-old fled on foot, and his girlfriend got into a car to follow him, running over the foot of a fifth tenant of the mobile home park, officers said. That tenant, whose age wasn’t available, told police that he stuck his foot out trying to stop the girlfriend from leaving, officers said.

The manager and the female tenant who accompanied her were unhurt.

Officers arrested the couple separately after they stopped the girlfriend’s vehicle and located the boyfriend near the Riverside Bridge in Mount Vernon.
