MOUNT VERNON — It’s bad enough running into another car, but a 59-year-old Burlington woman was particularly surprised at whose car she struck in a downtown fender bender Tuesday afternoon.
The woman had just dropped off her ballot at the Skagit County Superior Court building when she attempted to turn left out of the parking lot onto 3rd Avenue. A man in the southbound lane driving a 2006 Ford pickup stopped and waived for her to go. Sheriff Rick Grimstead, was driving in the lane next to the man. Neither the sheriff or the woman saw each other, and collided.
Grimstead turned on the red and blue lights in his damaged unmarked sheriff’s car, and pulled into the courthouse parking lot.
Neither were cited in the accident, although, the woman was more at fault because she did not have the right-of-way, said Mount Vernon Police Lt. Chris Cammock.
The sheriff was not breaking any traffic rules, and could not have prevented the fender bender, Cammock said.
