Derek Garcia (center) will wrestle at Ohio State.

SEDRO-WOOLLEY — Two weeks ago, Ohio State wasn’t on Derek Garcia’s radar.

As one of the top-ranked high school wrestlers in the country at his weight, the Sedro-Woolley three-time champion had his pick of scholarships, and the traditional powers like Oregon State and Oklahoma State were higher in his sights.

“I didn’t even consider them,” Garcia said of Ohio State.

He spoke to coach Tom Ryan online, then left for a weekend visit to Ohio State a week ago Friday. By the following Monday his mind was made up.

“It was the morals,” Garcia said. “They’re big in the Christian faith. That’s the way they carry their team, and that’s big for me. I hadn’t seen a school that worked like that, that had so much faith put into their school from both the wrestlers and the program.”

Ohio State has emerged as one of the top wrestling programs in the country, having finished second in the NCAA Tournament the past two years.

Well, it certainly is a lot nicer to see this kind of thing be “breaking news” other than the dismal garbage we ususally get! :)

I don’t think I’d call this “breaking news”, considering what else is happening. But, good for him.
