ALGER — Jonathon Allard has had bigger wins at Skagit Speedway, but may never have been more dominating than he was Friday on the second day of the Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup.

The Chico, Calif. driver dominated the A Main, cruising to a victory and earning himself the opportunity to be on the front row of tonight’s Race of Champions.

“We had a good night,” Allard said. “We went back to what worked a couple years ago.”

That strategy proved wise for the 2005 and 2006 champion.

Allard’s day didn’t start off nearly as well, as he qualified just 26th. He was the lowest qualifier to finish in the top three of a heat race, which put him on the front row for the A Main.

By that time, Allard was dialed in. He was never threatened, even with a pair of red flags. He was hitting lapped traffic by the fifth lap through all restarts. By the second red, he had seven lapped cars between himself and second place Brent Kaeding.

“The guys worked hard,” Allard said. “We were bad in qualifying, but the effort doesn’t stop.”

The A Main also featured a fight between a pair of Speedway locals who got tangled up. Steve Kilcup and Barry Martinez got tangled at the beginning of the straightaway, and Kilcup flipped up and took the brunt of the damage against the top wall, while Martinez spun out. Kilcup slid out of his car, ran over to Martinez’s car, pushed a crew member out of the way and appeared to punch Martinez who was still sitting in the car. The two were separated shortly after.

Kaeding was the biggest beneficiary. His engine caught on fire at the time of the fight, but he was able to get that sorted out during the red flag and didn’t have to lose his spot. He moved up to seventh on the restart, and worked his way up to second by the end of the race. His crew had to put out a second fire in the engine after the race.

Jared Ridge moved into third on the final lap, passing Colton Heath.

Tyler Walker’s fifth-place finish was enough to give him the points lead after two nights (1,094 points), meaning he will start on the pole for the six-racer scramble that determines the starting order of the Race of Champions’ first three rows. Joining him the scramble will be first-night winner Jayme Barnes (1,089), Roger Crockett (1,086), Allard (1,058), Jesse Whitney (1,058) and Brock Lemley (1,051).

Tayler Malsam won the B Main, passing Danielle Huson on the 10th of 15 laps. Tim Kaeding, after blowing a motor in the heat race, had to start at the back of the B Main. He nearly made it to the top seven, but had to settle for ninth and didn’t qualify for the A Main. Brandon Johnson, Bud Kaeding, Whitney and Kyle Hirst did move up, and Steve Kilcup held off teammate Toni Lutar to take the seventh spot.

Mike Sather passed Johnny Grey on the 13th lap of the 15-lap C Main to win the event. Grey held off Nick Engberg for the second slot. J.J. Hickle led the first seven laps, but had to pull off.

Crockett had the fast time in qualifying, turning a lap of 11.481 seconds. Barnes, who sat second in points coming in, slipped out of gear during qualifying on his first lap, but salvaged it with an 11.590 at the end of qualifying to finish fifth and keep himself in the hunt for a good starting spot in tonight’s Race of Champions.

Martinez won the first heat after Kaeding’s motor blew up on the eighth lap of the race. Crockett and Allard finished in the top three to qualify for the A Main.

Jason Bloodgood led from start to finish of the second heat. Travis Rutz jumped from fourth to second on the start and stayed there, with Walker taking third.

Jeff Hodgson led from start to finish of the third heat after Johnson, the pole sitter, couldn’t make the start with rear-end problems. Mitch Olson and Aaron Fell earned the other two qualifying positions.

Brock Lemley led all the way in the fourth heat, with Ridge and Eric Fisher also moving up.

Brent Kaeding never trailed in the fifth heat, but all the excitement happened behind him.

Derek Holmwood, in second at the time, spun out on the fifth lap but recovered and kept going. Dan Simpson stalled out trying to stop for Holmwood, so the yellow flag came out for Simpson, giving Holmwood his spot back. It all proved moot, however, as both Colton Heath and Barnes passed Holmwood after the restart to take the final two move-up spots.
