MOUNT VERNON — As the family and friends of Chrystal Hansen mourn her sudden death, the 26-year-old man investigators say killed her in a suspected drunk driving accident Monday night awaits prosecution.
Adam Hayden, of Concrete, is scheduled to be arraigned on a vehicular homicide charge today in Skagit County Superior Court. Hayden is being held in the Skagit County Jail on $250,000 bail.
“We’ll get him arraigned and we’ll move this case forward,” said Skagit County Prosecutor Rich Weyrich.
Hayden is accused of running a red light Monday night at the intersection of Highway 20 and Cook Road in Sedro-Woolley, striking and killing 22-year-old Hansen, of Sedro-Woolley. Hansen was six weeks pregnant and engaged to be married in July. She was driving a 1993 Honda Accord. Her fiancé, William Coggins, 24, of Sedro-Woolley, was in the passenger seat, according to the State Patrol.
Investigators say Hayden failed a sobriety test at the scene, reeked of alcohol and told a trooper that he was taking a sleep medication, according to a report by the State Patrol filed in Skagit County Superior Court.
While sitting in the back of a patrol car after the accident, Hayden cried, the report says.
If convicted Hayden could face three to four years in prison based on his criminal history, Weyrich said.
Hayden has one felony conviction for assault and four misdemeanors, according to court documents.
Although no one other than Hansen appeared to be seriously injured at the scene of the accident, Hansen’s fiancé suffered an aneurysm Tuesday, said State Patrol Trooper Keith Leary.
Coggins was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle Tuesday and has since been released. Investigators do not yet know if the aneurysm is related to the accident.
Hayden could face an additional charge if the investigation shows Coggins condition stemmed from the collision, Leary said.
“If alcohol is a factor, this is a very unfortunate reminder of what happens if we get behind the wheel and make a bad decision,” Leary said.
Leary said detectives interviewed several witnesses in the case Wednesday, but the State Patrol has not said where Hayden had come from or was going the night of the accident.
Hansen grew up in Burlington. She graduated from Burlington-Edison High School in 2004 where she played softball and varsity volleyball and worked as an aide in the counselor’s office. Friends and former teammates of Hansen describe her as a bubbly, outgoing athlete who would befriend everyone.
“Some people go through life complaining and dwelling on the negative. That was definitely NOT Chrystal. She was always bright and sunny,” Bobbie Miller, a former softball teammate and longtime friend of Hansen wrote in an e-mail to the Skagit Valley Herald. “I just hope that people learn something from this tragic loss, so that we don’t have to lose anyone else in this way.”
