Rumba meets Raga at the Star Bar, where Indian/Afro-Cuban ensemble Anjuman performs at 9 p.m. Friday.
Anjuman has found a unique and uncompromised way of combining powerful East Indian melodies with the rhythmic vitality of Afro-Cuban drumming. The trio features Brandon McIntosh on sarod, Seth Littlefield on drums/congas and Phil Georgas on bass.
McIntosh, the son of Molly and Forest McIntosh of Anacortes, will travel to India for winter training with his guru Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta after the performance.
A sarod has 23 strings intricately stretched over a goatskin head and a fretless chrome fingerboard. A clear, rich sound is produced by pressing the strings down with the tip of a fingernail.
The band’s debut CD, “Rumba meets Raga,” will be available for sale at the show. This will be Anjuman’s fourth Star Bar appearance. It is free and open to ages 21 or older. Call 299-2120 or visit http://www.starbaranacortes.com.
