A diverse week of entertainment, including folk, gypsy jazz, Broadway, Celtic and chamber music, is lined up for an expanded Anacortes Arts Festival Concerts at the Port series starting July 26 on the KPLU Stage at the Port Warehouse, First Street and Commercial Avenue.

The intimate venue, no-host wine and the waterfront setting have made Concerts at the Port a sell-out festival favorite.

All shows are $15 except the Anna Schaad performance July 28, which has admission by donation.

• Events get to a lively start with improv comedy by the Upfront Theatre group at 8 p.m. Saturday, July 26. Started by “Whose Line is it Anyway” comic Ryan Stiles, the group has a Bellingham theater, where it hosts performances and teaches improv classes.

• Autoharp master and storyteller Bryan Bowers, performs 4 p.m. Sunday, July 27

In 1993, Bowers was inducted into the Autoharp Hall of Fame, where he joined legends such as Maybelle Carter, Kilby Snow and Sara Carter, and Frets Magazine named him to its First Gallery of the Greats

“Bowers is widely regarded as the leading virtuoso on the autoharp ... Bowers also has distinct gifts as a singer and songwriter,” said People magazine.

“He has more stage presence and charisma than any stage performer in recent memory,” wrote the Washington Times.

• Celtic violinist Anna Schaad plays at noon Monday, July 28. Schaad was a member of Seattle Youth Symphony for four years, immersed in the great classical symphonic works, and as a high school student studied under concert violist Paul Coletti at the University of Washington. At Evergreen State College she created the Talking Fiddle program, a music therapy program for senior citizens and Alzheimer’s patients. She expanded into American and Celtic fiddling, and has played for several bands, including Clumsy Lovers, and recorded with local artists passing through the region, such as Big Brother and the Holding Company.

• Barbara King and Lynne Rheinhardt perform Broadway Plus at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 29.

• The Nexus Trio perform chamber music to spice up a summer evening at 6:30 p.m. July 30. Pianist Nancy Heyer, violinist Julia South Lattimer and cellist Doug Heyer have performed with a wide range of symphonies, choirs and chamber groups in the Bellingham area.

Nancy Heyer recently was featured soloist with the Whatcom Chorale Sinfonia and has performed with the Cascade Ensemble and other chamber groups as soloist and chamber music collaborator.

Lattimer spent the last eight years in the Los Angeles area playing with a variety of orchestras and chamber ensembles. She was concertmaster of the Channel Islands Chamber Orchestra and established the Channel Islands String Quartet in Camarillo, Calif.

Doug Heyer played cello in the Cascade, Everett and Whatcom symphonies and was principal cellist of the Skagit Symphony for several years. He currently performs regularly with the Cascade Ensemble, the Whatcom Chorale Sinfonia and other chamber groups in the region.

• Perennial Anacortes favorite Pearl Django performs Hot Club-style gypsy jazz at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1. One of America’s most respected and busiest Hot Club style groups, their music transcends simple categorization and appeals to a wide variety of audiences, including Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli fans, guitar enthusiasts, lovers of string music, bluegrass devotees, those drawn to French and gypsy accents, jazz buffs and aficionados of the new swing music.

Seattle Weekly lauds the band’s gypsy jazz style: “They do it with such verve, skill and pleasure that they’re pretty much irresistible to jazz and non-jazz listeners alike.”

• Argentine tango trio La Luciernaga closes the week at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2. Dance fans will want to see this outfit, which has performed at a number of major Seattle tango events. The trio often joins with noted dancers and musicians for special projects.
