It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No, it’s comic book camp!

While most folks remember the beguiling power of comic books as a child, many never learned the skills necessary to make their own.

That’s where Bluewater Productions comes in. The company will host the third annual comic book camp this year in Skagit County.

“We want to teach kids they can be creative without having to draw,” said Darren Davis, president and editor-in-chief of Bluewater Productions.

The camp will teach children and teenagers everything they need to know about producing their own comic book as well as learn history about the comic book industry.

Throughout the camp, there will be special guests and participants will receive free goodies from DC and Dark House comics. Participants will also receive a free, year-long subscription to a comic of their choice.

The camp has limited spots, so youths are encouraged to sign up early.

The camp is being held from noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 11 to Aug. 14 at Docking Bay 93 in Mount Vernon and is open to children and teenagers ages 10 to 17. The cost is $195.

“Each of the kids has equal part in production and we make sure every skill level is met,” Davis said.

All materials and snacks will be supplied for participants and the camp is taught by comic book professionals.

Kids are also reminded that they don’t need to know how to draw to attend the camp.

“When I was a kid, I got frustrated because I couldn’t draw as well as other kids,” Davis said. “I want kids to learn how to create comics without having to be Van Gogh.”

At the end of the camp, a comic book is produced by the attending youth and is sold at local comic shops and at independent book stores.

All the profits of the comics sold go to a nonprofit organization of the participants’ choice. Last year, profits were donated to the Whatcom County Library system.

Davis said the reason they host the comic book camp is because he wants youth to learn about civics and community and teach them to expand their imaginations.

“I feel like I’m giving back to the community,” Davis said.

The camp teaches participants everything they need to know about producing, scripting, printing and the business side of comics.

“The kids get something out of this and it’s a great way for them to expand their imaginations,” Davis said. “You’re never too young to create a comic book.”
