When Kristi Hein and her husband, Casey Bazewick, took down the fence between their home and Anacortes Community Forestlands, a neighbor warned them they needed that fence to keep wild animals out.
But Hein and Bazewick wanted the opposite — they wanted to invite critters in.
“People don’t realize that habitat loss is the single greatest factor in the diminishment of wildlife,” Hein said.
Their yard is one of 525 Fidalgo Island yards certified as a backyard wildlife habitat, and the 18,100-resident island has been named a National Wildlife Federation Wildlife Habitat Community.
