It’s filing week for those running for public office, and this time, Doris Brevoort plans get on the ballot.
Brevoort, a Democrat, ran unsuccessfully as a write-in candidate in the 2007 Mount Vernon mayoral race, and now plans to run for the Mount Vernon City Council.
Four of the seven Mount Vernon City Council seats are up for election this fall, as are more than two dozen other town and city council seats and positions on the boards or commissions of port, cemetery, school, hospital, fire protection, park and recreation, sewer and water districts. Anacortes and Concrete will have mayoral races as well.
For those races with more than two candidates, there will be a primary election Aug. 18. Cemetery districts and Fidalgo Park and Recreation District races will only appear on the Nov. 3 general election ballot, no matter how many candidates file, according to the Skagit County Auditor’s Office.
Filing week officially begins Monday and ends Friday, but a few candidates have already sent in their declaration of candidacy by mail.
Concrete Mayor Judd Wilson, Anacortes City Councilwoman Cynthia Richardson and Cemetery District 3 Commissioner Michael E. Jackets are running to keep their seats, a list from the county Auditor’s Office shows.
In Skagit County, those interested in running for office can also file online or at the county Auditor’s Office through Friday. The filing fee is usually 1 percent of the elected office’s annual salary, according to the Auditor’s Office.
Filing for many town council, school board, water, fire and hospital district races in Island County will also be open from Monday to Friday.
