Don Jonasson, chairman of the Fire District 6 Commission, is resigning for health reasons, according to a fellow commissioner.
Commissioner Trevor Ford said Friday that Jonasson has been having health problems related to the stress of ongoing negotiations between the district and city of Burlington and has submitted a letter of resignation.
The Skagit County Auditor’s Office did not yet have the letter from Jonasson Friday afternoon, Elections Outreach Coordinator Gabrielle Clay said.
The most recent contract between the Burlington and Fire District 6, which provide fire service jointly, expired March 31, and negotiations have so far failed to produce a new agreement.
The Fire District 6 Commission is scheduled to meet Monday at 1:30 p.m. and plans to appoint a replacement for Jonasson then, Ford said.
Two people filed earlier this month to run for Jonasson’s seat, which is up for election this fall. They are Dave Smoots, who has worked as a self-appointed mediator between the district and city in recent months and Steven Omdal, who Ford said he did not know.
Ford said both men will be invited to interview for the position Monday afternoon.
District Commissioner Richard Whalen said Thursday that he also hopes to vote Monday on a contract that would keep the city and district working together.
The commission’s meeting will be at the district’s Bayridge Station, 16220 Peterson Road.
