A small fire that was quickly extinguished on the roof of the Fabrics Plus store at 608 Commercial Ave. Wednesday was sparked by a roofing company torching down asphalt, a technique often used on flat roofs.
The crew from Jason Thompson Roofing of Skagit County put out the fire with extinguishers as Anacortes fire and police departments responded, said Division Chief John Bird. The initial call came into the fire department at 11:36 a.m.
Bird said the roofing operation overheated the material to the edge of the roof and caught the exterior wall of the Shannon Building next door on fire.
The fire department put a little water on it to assure it was out and used chain saws to open up the wall to make sure it hadn’t gone through and into void spaces where it would extend into the building, which it hadn’t, Bird said. A strip of siding about 3 feet high and 7 inches wide was affected, he said.
There were no injuries and no damage to the Fabrics Plus building, Bird said.
The department’s initial estimate of damage to the siding of the Shannon Building was $1,000 to $2,000.
