‘Sky Painting,’ a surreal 24 by 32-inch acrylic on canvas painting by Larry Heald is one of 40 of Heald’s works featured at his ‘Observations’ show this month at Insights Gallery.

“Observations” with a mental twist, “Autumn Colors,” “Haunted” images, “Sea to Sky” and art influenced by the nature of Cascadia are among the diverse and outstanding shows opening in Anacortes during the First Friday Gallery Walk, 6-9 p.m. Friday at several locations.

Larry Heald’s mentally challenging paintings — or “Observations” — are reminiscent of M.C. Escher’s mind-bending works, where art and subject interact and change places.

There are few boundaries in his surreal pieces: Windows within his works become frames for artworks within the artworks, and his subjects often spill out into their setting. The 40 Heald works in this show are certainly worth a good long look. The show continues through the month at Insights.

Those who prefer vivid colors won’t want to miss the “Autumn Colors” show at Anne Martin McCool Gallery or a show of new oils by Jennifer Bowman at Scott Milo Gallery.

McCool and Bowman are both talented and well-known Anacortes artists with distinctive and vibrant styles.

The First Friday Gallery Walk also includes:

• That Photo Shoppe (formerly Digital Art Moments), 512 Commercial Ave., with “Sky to Sea,” images from Lynn Karns, and “Haunted” images by various artists.

• Adrift, 510 Commercial Ave., with paintings by local artists.

• Scott Milo Gallery, 420 Commercial Ave., as well as oils by Jennifer Bowman, the gallery presents pastels and oils by Amanda Houston, large oils on canvas by Dederick Ward, watercolors and acrylics by Robert Abrams and a selection of sculptures, woodwork, jewelry and glass.

• Depot Arts Center, 611 R Ave., presents “Cascadia: Born from Nature,” featuring textiles, pottery and paintings from Margo Grothe, Patricia Resseguie and Renate Trapkowski. Photos by the Valley Camera Club are in the Baggage Room Gallery.

• Bowman Gallery, 801 Fifth St., offers photographs by Marius Hibbard.
