Audience participation and a killer musical lineup are key attractions of Get Animated!, a unique participatory concert event unfolding Saturday and Sunday, June 21 and 22, at Department of Safety.

“I think what makes Get Animated! different from any other weekend of rock ‘n’ roll is the ‘be involved,’ ‘be active’ aspect of it,” said event organizer Carissa Moran.

The event will incorporate noise, experimental, electronic and pop music, animation showcases and evolving art. Direct audience participation includes design and construction of an art installation — an evolving clubhouse of sorts — in the DoS gallery space.

“The form of the structure and its environment will be made up entirely by our audience turned artists who are now sharing in a solidified vision,” Moran said.

At 1 p.m. Saturday a concert features The Feathers, Quirk Monarch and Pleasureboaters. Admission is $3 or a donation. During that show, “Everyone will be decorating piñatas sculpted by Eden Veaudry, which will then be broken to pieces by the audience later in the evening during the finale of Saturday,” she said.

Following at 7 p.m. Saturday is a concert that includes Guidance Counselor, Flaspar and Rainbow and the Kittens, with animation by E*Rock. Admission is $6.

“That evening various instruments for percussion and sound will be passed out among the crowd, who will be encouraged to add to a bare-bones song performed by Rainbow and the Kittens. They themselves will be dispensed among the audience as they play via battery operated amps,” Moran said. “The hope is to record the song the audience creates and set it up to be the soundtrack for the installation for Sunday. The hope is to create a place, a feeling, a moment where everyone participating feels like they’re participating.”

Sunday’s show starts at 7 p.m. and features Mt. Eerie, Typhoon, Eskimo & Sons and World’s Greatest Ghost. Admission is $6.
