Jane Zillig (from right), a Skagit Land Trust specialist, holds handfuls of used shotgun shells that she picked up Wednesday from Skagit County’s newest park, which will provide low-impact access to the Skagit River just west of Lyman. Behind Zillig stands Renata Maybruck also with the land trust. An abandoned and shot-up truck sits in the background during a tour Wednesday of the park off Robinson Road. A gate has been installed to prevent dumping.

LYMAN — Skagit County’s newest park offers one of the few public access points to the Skagit River — gravel bars on the water’s edge offer children a place to play, fly fishermen a spot to cast and salmon to spawn.

“Once it’s discovered, it will really be used,” said Brian Adams, county parks director. “It’s just so much more beautiful than Young’s Bar.”

Young’s Bar is on the river in west Mount Vernon.

On Tuesday morning, the water riffled over gravel and birds called from the trees.

The yet-to-be named 33-acre park is just west of Lyman at the end of Robinson Road, which is just off of Lyman-Hamilton Road. It’s also within walking distance of the Cascade Rails to Trails, which stretches from Sedro-Woolley to Concrete.

“It’s just so pretty out here,” said Molly Doran, executive director of the Skagit Land Trust. “It’s amazing how wild it is so close to town.”
