Anacortes High School senior Dan Gwost was awarded a $3,000 Anacortes High School Marine Technology Scholarship from Flounder Bay Yacht Club. The one-year scholarship was started this year for a senior to enroll in Skagit Valley College’s two-year marine technology course.
The college-level marine technology program offers a two-year curriculum that teaches marine skills that are vital to a career in the marine industry and are easily transferred into other high-tech industries including aerospace, energy and transportation. The marine technology school, located in Oak Harbor, is part of Skagit Valley College. Graduates of the center learn a full array of technical skills that are essential to the workforce needed by the region’s thriving boat building and marine service industry.
Gwost has volunteered as a crew member on the Lady Washington and helped conduct tours. He has also competed in the Pacific Challenge, a rowing and sailing competition, three times, winning twice.
Gwost plans to live aboard his sailboat in Oak Harbor during the school year.
