FRIDAY HARBOR — The harbor seal called Concho that was removed from Penn Cove twice by boaters at the end of July, resulting separation from her mother, died Tuesday at a wildlife rehabilitation facility.
The body of the seal, which was less than a month old, will be sent to a veterinarian for a necropsy, said Jessica Recktenwald, a seasonal staff rehabiliator at Wolf Hollow Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Friday Harbor.
NOAA Fisheries Enforcement Division, the federal agency responsible for enforcing laws aimed at protecting marine mammals, such as seals, is investigating the two couples who in separate incidents on July 23 and 25 removed the seal from Penn Cove.
