MOUNT VERNON — A 27-year-old inmate was transported to the Skagit Valley Hospital and is undergoing surgery on his spleen after he was beaten in the Skagit County Jail Thursday, according to the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office.

Another inmate was trying to take prescription medication from the La Conner man. When the La Conner man refused to give it up, the other inmate attacked the victim, Chief Criminal Deputy Will Reichardt said.

The injured inmate told deputies at the jail that he was experiencing abdominal pain. He suffered internal bleeding in his abdomen from the assaults, Reichardt said.

Deputies are investigating and would not give information about the suspect.
