The Island County Health Department warns residents not to swim in, ski on or drink the waters of Lone Lake on Whidbey Island. The health agency confirmed today that toxic algae, called cyanobacteria, are present in the lake.
Health authorities say the toxins produced by the algae can cause severe illness in animals and humans. Symptoms include jaundice, shock, abdominal pain/distention, weakness, nausea/vomiting, severe thirst, rapid/weak pulse and death.
The department will change the posting at the lake from a “caution” indicated that the algae may be present to a “warning” that the algae is present.
