ANACORTES — A good leader’s enthusiasm and dedication trickles down.

Bernard Selting is an example of how that affects a community.

The Island View Elementary School principal was honored recently with the Golden Apple Award after being nominated by parent Treva King.

“With a good leader, the teachers work hard and the students are the winners and so is the community,” King said. “Bernie is steadfast and he’s been here. He’s dedicated not only to his kids, but the teachers and the school.”

Selting was one of 10 recipients of the 2009 KCTS9 public television station’s Golden Apple Award. The winners are made up of individuals and programs, including the La Conner School District’s Skagit River Poetry Project and its director Molly McNutty.

The award honors teachers, volunteers, administrators, staff, community organizations and local businesses that contribute to education in Washington. Recipients will be featured in a primetime special that will air on public television stations across the state and receive a financial award.

“There’s no greater honor than to be recognized by the people you serve,” Selting said.

King, who has a kindergartner and a second-grader at Island View, used to teach at the high school. She remembers hearing students talk about Selting, who attends events of former students at the middle school and high school.

“Those kind of things make everyone feel they’re valued,” King said.

She said every child feels like they’re the most important to Selting.

“He’s a shining, happy role model that the kids at Island View need and are getting,” she said. “I rarely see the man in his office, he’s either in the halls or in a classroom or on the playground. I think that says a lot.”
