MOUNT VERNON — Did Alan Gromus attack his wife with a baseball bat, or was the assailant an unidentified attacker in a gray, hooded sweatshirt?

Did Gromus mistake his neighbor for his wife’s attacker, or did he turn on a man who caught him in the act of assaulting his wife?

Those are the questions now in the hands of a Skagit County Superior Court jury that will decide whether Gromus, a former Mount Vernon High School teacher, is guilty of first-degree assault in the Sept. 30 attacks on Pam Gromus and a neighbor, Greg O’Connor.

The prosecution and defense gave closing statements Wednesday, each attacking the credibility of various witnesses, including the victims. Pam Gromus and O’Connor testified during the 2 1⁄2-week trial, with Pam Gromus claiming that her pain medications initially affected her memories.

Alan Gromus, 57, of South Fidalgo Island faces two counts of assault stemming from the incident outside the couple’s Campbell Lake home. Pam Gromus, 54, suffered head injuries, and O’Connor received a dislocated and broken ankle.
