MOUNT VERNON — The husband and wife charged in connection with the seizure of 443 dogs from a kennel in the Big Lake area in January entered not guilty pleas this morning to 10 charges in Skagit County Superior Court.

Richard and Marjorie Sundberg each face four Class C felony charges of first-degree animal cruelty related to the mistreatment of the dogs on their Mountain Lake property. They also face six misdemeanor charges related to the kennel case, including four second-degree animal cruelty charges, one for transporting or confining an animal in an unsafe manner and one for violating the county’s unified development code, according to court documents.

The hundreds of dogs seized from the Sundberg’s property during two separate raids remain in the county’s care. Some have given birth, others are pregnant. The Sundbergs have asked for the the court for the dogs back.

A hearing on the dogs’ custody is set for March 5 at 1:30 p.m.
