Rainy weather didn’t spoil the day for 88 kids who showed up at Heart Lake June 14 to cast a line in the Anacortes Parks and Recreation Department’s annual Kids Fishing Derby.
Those who participated had a good time, including Cooper Nichols, son of Sarah and Robb Nichols of Anacortes, who won a fishing pole by landing the smallest fish in the age 4 and under category.
“He was all smiles when he came home and very proud of his new fishing rod,” said his mom Sarah in an e-mail message.
Key derby sponsors were Whidbey Island Bank, Concrete Lions Club, Sebo’s, Ace Hardware and the Fidalgo Chapter Puget Sound Anglers, Karl Franz in particular, said Nicole Johnson of the Anacortes Parks and Recreation Department.
2008 Fishing Derby Results
• 4 and under: Lovey Gates, largest fish, 9 oz.; Cooper Nichols, smallest fish, 3 oz.
• 5-8: Paul Kline, largest fish, 15 oz.; Shary Richmond, smallest fish, 5 oz.
• 9-12: Aidan Garcia, largest fish, 16 oz.; Morgan Shimkys, smallest fish, 3 oz.
• 13-15: Kenneth Fann, largest fish, 14 oz.; Mirinda Hernkind, smallest fish 5 oz.
Largest fish overall of the day went to Aidan Garcia for a 16 oz. specimen, and smallest fish overall of the day was a tie between Cooper Nichols and Morgan Shimkys.
