Remote access allows entrance to a computer from a distant location. Although it is simply the process of allowing a connectivity to your computer, it’s implications are tremendous.
We use remote access every time we use the Internet. Cable, DSL and dial-up connections all use remote access via cable, cell phone towers or telephone lines. Our Internet Service Provider uses it to connect us to the server that contains the Web site we are viewing.
In business, people at branch offices, telecommuters, and travelers take advantage of its usefulness. Laptop computers and specialized cell phones (smart phones and BlackBerries, etc.) also take advantage of remote access. When you think about it, most of us use remote access every day.
Nevertheless, the more commonly used definition refers to connecting to another computer from another location (not the Internet). There are typically two main reasons for the connection:
• To access a file or
• To access and control the computer from another location
The later is also called remote desktop. This allows you to use your home computer as if you were sitting in front of it.
It is handy for computer support and troubleshooting issues. You “open the door” for visitors by issuing an invitation. That way, I can’t come in whenever I want.
But, it is handy for me to look at your PC for troubleshooting — and much less expensive for you. I commonly provide computer support and instruction through remote access. It allows me to see your movements on the screen, which aids in repairs and teaching.
We are also seeing a tremendous change in education with remote access. It is now common for students to complete degrees by gaining access to a college or university server and library information.
Databases of endless research and knowledge are now easily available for remote access and distant learning.
These remote access solutions are accessed via the Web sites of organization with logins and passwords. For home and small business use, software programs allow the security we need. GoToMyPC and LogMeIn are two commonly used programs, but of course, there are many more.
Setup for the software is quite easy. You simply go to the software provider’s Web site, download their program and follow the installation instructions. That’s it. To use the connection you leave your original machine turned on and from the remote PC log in to the same Web site and select connect.
Your PC desktop will now appear in front of you and you can start working. You can access your e-mail, applications and documents — just as if you were sitting in front of your machine. You have complete access to everything on your PC — even if you are thousands of miles away. And, of course, there is solid security system with the use of passwords.
Current remote desktop software does have some drawbacks. Most are due to the speed of your connection. We still aren’t to the point of a lag-free experience. You’ll need to be prepared for a slight delay in movements that result in a very sluggish mouse, but it certainly cuts down on gas and wear and tear on your vehicle.
