Lawn mower sparks Campbell Lake fire

Mount Erie Fire District firefighters extinguished a one-acre fire on the south side of Campbell Lake that was called in around 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 30.

It was likely started by a lawn mower, said Vince Streano, a spokesman for the Mount Erie Fire District.

A man apparently mowed his field a few days earlier, giving the long grass time to dry out. When the man went back to mow the edges, Streano said the mower likely hit a rock, which sparked and ignited the grass.

“Suddenly he looked behind him and the fire was starting,” Streano said.

He said the man tried to put the fire out with a hose.  “It was quite windy and spread fairly rapidly,” Streano said.

The fire was put out by three fire engine crews. Streano said it was a good opportunity for firefighters to practice their wild land skills.
“Nothing was endangered in terms of it getting away because it was pretty well isolated,” he said.
