A small increase to the fees charged to nonresident patrons at the Anacortes Public Library takes effect Jan. 1.
The increase of $1 per quarter brings the cost of non-resident library cards to $20 for three months, $40 for six months and $80 for 12 months — about a 5 percent increase for a year. This fee covers the individual purchasing the card and family members in the household.
The nonresident card offers all materials and services provided to resident card holders, including check out of books, magazines, music, movies and audiobooks; download of audiobooks and databases through the library’s Web site; and reference and inter-library loan services.
A card is not required to use services such as Internet, research, and word-processing computers; Wi-Fi service; study rooms for small groups; a community meeting room for large groups; and educational and cultural programs for all ages.
The city of Anacortes funds the Anacortes Public Library through taxes paid by city residents and property owners. Those who live or own property within the city limits are considered residents and are eligible for a library card as city taxpayers. Those who live outside the city limits and pay no city taxes may purchase a card for a small fee, which partially offsets library costs. The non-resident fee is about half the amount a city resident pays toward funding the library.
