Listeria found in raw milk from Shaw Island

The state Department of Agriculture has issued a warning about raw milk sold from Shaw Island this month.

The agency reported finding harmful bacteria in milk from Our Lady of the Rock Dairy on Shaw Island in early August and recommends customers who purchased milk from the dairy at that time discard it immediately.

A routine sample on Aug. 4 routine showed the milk contained listeria monocytogenes, which can cause listeriosis.

Symptoms include fever, muscle aches and gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea or diarrhea. If infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms such as headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance or convulsions can occur.

No illnesses had been reported as of today.
