Incumbent Commissioner Al Littlefield will likely serve another six years for the Skagit Public Utility District No. 1 with a 23 percentage point lead in the initial ballot county Tuesday evening.
Littlefield garnered 61.4 percent approval with 18,323 votes. His opponent, former PUD General Manager Ken Kukuk, trailed with 38.2 percent approval and 11,400 votes.
Although Littlefield and Kukuk both supported public power and are open to putting fluoridation to another public vote, they differed in experience. Both carry more than 20 years of experience with utility districts, but on different sides of the organization.
Littlefield has been a Skagit PUD commissioner since 1986, and Kukuk has made a career of managing public utilities, including Skagit’s, which supplies water to most of the county.
Littlefield built his campaign focusing on his 22 years on the board. He said he hoped to complete unfinished business, such as a new intake pump on the Skagit River. He also wanted to discuss a piping system that would pump water from central Skagit County into Anacortes in the event of an emergency. Skagit County already has such a system, which would pump water from Anacortes.
