Loggerodeo? You mean that Fourth of July event in Sedro-Woolley that’s all about loggers and a rodeo?

Well, not quite.

To say that the 75th annual Loggerodeo has something for everyone would be just ABOUT right. The event, spanning two weekends, includes a magic show, an antique tractor show, the popular chain-saw carving, food, music, dancing and just about anything else that would count as family entertainment.

Many of the events are hands-on, too. And nothing is more hands-on than the Businessman’s Cow Milking, part of the Pro-West Rodeo for the second year.

Teams from local businesses will compete to see how long it takes to milk a cow and deliver the bottle to a judge.

“It was entertaining to say the very least,” Sedro-Woolley Riding and Racing Club President Kristen Hinton said of last year’s contest.

The biggest change this year for Loggerodeo is the venue for some of the festivities. The carnival, and the food and craft vendors have relocated to Riverfront Park.

The fireworks will go off at the park, too. Having the fireworks, carnival and the food vendors in the same location — with a lot more parking — should work in everyone’s favor, Loggerodeo President Jeanne McLennan said.

The carnival opens Friday and Saturday, in addition to Wednesday through Saturday over the Fourth of July weekend.

“The carnival is real excited about the new venue,” McLennan said.

The celebration and the ceremony will be heightened a notch or two for Loggerodeo’s 75th year.

The Grand Parade, yet another Loggerodeo tradition, is honoring the anniversary by inviting all past grand marshals to appear on the same float. In addition, a special birthday cake float will carry Nyal Thomas’ chain-saw carving of the Loggerodeo logo. The intricate piece depicts a logger riding a bucking logging truck and holding an ax.

The carving will be auctioned off Sunday, July 5, to help cover the cost of cancer treatments for Thomas’ wife, Jeannie.

The fireworks show, which begins at dusk on the Fourth of July, will be a little bigger and a little longer in honor of Nigel Clarke, grandson of Hank and Mary Geary. Clarke, 15, died in a bicycle crash in California in 2007. Hank Geary is a former chairman of the Loggerodeo board.

Cindy Clarke, Nigel’s mother, attended Loggerodeo for the first time without her son last year.

“The support of one’s hometown, after you go through a crisis, is comforting. I suppose one can say that you are home,” Cindy Clarke said of her visit last year.

For McLennan, the Loggerodeo president, the event’s 75th anniversary has a special meaning. Her father, Frank Martin, was Loggerodeo president in the 1980s.

“I have a pretty soft spot in my heart for Sedro-Woolley, and Loggerodeo was always a large part of my childhood. So it means a lot to me that it’s still thriving, and my parents are still involved,” McLennan said.
