Lyman receives grant to buy mansion

The town of Lyman will receive a $200,000 grant from the state to buy the historic Minkler mansion, according to a town news release.

The 1891 Victorian home on Main Street will become the new Town Hall, Mayor Debra Heinzman said.

More money is needed to pay for renovations, but the town has secured enough funding for the purchase. The deal will close by Aug. 15, Heinzman said.

Lyman’s grant application to the state Heritage Capital Project Fund scored third-highest among all recipients, the release said.

“It was the best news we could have had (Wednesday),” Heinzman said Thursday. “It was hard to sleep last night. I think it’s going to be the best thing that’s happened in this town.”

The two-story mansion reflects Lyman’s history as a hub of the upriver logging industry. The house was built in 1891 by Birdsey D. Minkler, who founded Birdsview and became a prominent mill owner and a member of the state’s first House of Representatives.

The town has applied for other grants to restore the home — possibly to convert some of the space for providing basic health care. The town also plans to raise money for the project by selling a commercial space next to Heinzman’s Lyman Tavern, the mayor said.
