The 4 p.m. forecast for the Skagit River shows a significant drop in expected flood levels at Concrete and Mount Vernon.
The Skagit’s flood elevation began to decline at Concrete within the last two hours after peaking shy of 29 feet. The river is expected to rise again as high water from the Sauk River revives the flood.
But the peak at Concrete should only reach 32.2 feet at 4 a.m. Thursday, according to the latest National Weather Service forecast. That’s below major-flood stage and not enough to significantly affect the most vulnerable communities including Cape Horn and Hamilton.
The Skagit is forecast to crest at Mount Vernon at 28.4 feet during the day on Thursday. The city has no plans to place sandbags or take other flood-fight measures, Mayor Bud Norris said Wednesday afternoon.
Rainfall totals so far show that Skagit County was not hit by the worst of last night’s storm, which dumped more rain to the south.
