Man sentenced in assault of girlfriend

MOUNT VERNON β€” A 27-year-old man accused of beating, raping and threatening to kill his girlfriend while preventing her from leaving their apartment for days pleaded guilty to a reduced charge today and was sentenced to 21 months in prison.

In exchange for the plea, five felony charges were dismissed. Guadalupe Wally Cienfuegos pleaded guilty to a charge of second-degree attempted assault in Skagit County Superior Court.

Cienfuegos was originally charged with two counts of second-degree rape, second-degree assault, unlawful imprisonment and harassment with threats to kill.

Prosecuting attorney Edward Norton said the victim recanted her original statements to law enforcement about being raped and kidnapped, which is why the charges were significantly amended.

Norton works on many cases involving domestic violence. Recantation, he said, is unfortunately β€œvery common.”
