ROCKPORT — The 14-year-old Concrete boy who shot and killed a 54-year-old hiker was officially charged today with first-degree manslaughter.
He is scheduled to appear in Skagit County Superior Court on Sept. 3 for arraignment.
The young hunter killed Pamela Almli of Oso Aug. 2 when he mistook her for a bear while hunting on Sauk Mountain. Almli was hiking on a trail with a friend at the time. The teen was hunting with his 16-year-old brother.
Court documents say the teen recklessly caused the death of another by not identifying his target through the fog before he pulled the trigger.
The juvenile’s attorney, Roy Howson of Mount Vernon, said he had not seen the official charging documents Friday afternoon, and the boy's family did not want to comment.
“They’re having a very, very, hard time, and they feel for what the Almlis are going through and are going through their own pain,” Howson said. “From everybody’s viewpoint, it’s really a tragedy, and the young man’s family is really broken up.”
The Skagit Valley Herald generally does not publish the names of juvenile defendants.
