Mataya named conference MVP

Burlington-Edison volleyball player Katlyn Mataya has been named the Northwest Conference MVP.

Mataya, a sophomore setter, helped the Tigers to a share of the conference title and to a berth in the Class 2A state tournament.

Burlington-Edison was 16-4 overall.

Three of Mataya’s teammated also earned all-conference honors.

Cheryl Eubanks was named to the first team, while Lucy Capron and Anna Swanson made the second team.

Anacortes’ Tyler Calles and Jessica Straight earned first-team honors.

The pair led the Seahawks to a 15-7 record and a fifth-place finish in the Class 2A state tournament.

Anacortes’ Faith Vandeway earned honorable mention.

Mount Vernon had three all-conference honorees — first-teamer Jenny Taylor, and honorable mention picks Derrick Walser and Danae VerMulm.

Sedro-Woolley’s Sara Ringhouse earned honorable mention.

Tigers honored

Four runners off Burlington-Edison’s state championship boys’ cross country team earned first-team all-Northwest Conference honors.

Honored on the 10-runner team were Connor Whan, Tyler Williams, Antonio Morales and Nathan Power.

The conference MVP was Sehome’s Scott Carlyle.

Murray, Brown named to first team

Mount Vernon’s Tessa Murray and Burlington-Edison’s Sydney Brown earned first-team all-Northwest Conference honors in girls’ cross country.

The conference MVP was Sehome’s Annie Moore.
