MOUNT VERNON — The mayor stopped short of making a formal announcement, but it appears almost certain that controversial talk-show pundit Glenn Beck, a Mount Vernon native, will hold an event here on Sept. 26.

The event is still being finalized, Mayor Bud Norris said Friday afternoon, adding that he’ll make a statement Monday.

When asked if the event was a sure thing, he said, “I’d say it’s 99 percent.”

Norris first made his plans known on Aug. 17, saying he would like to give Beck a key to the city and name a day in his honor. At the time, Norris said the event was “very tentative.”

Norris said Thursday he was to meet with someone close to Beck from Bellingham on Friday.

Norris sent an e-mail to city department heads and council members just before noon Friday, with the subject “Tickets to Glenn Beck Event.” No details were offered about the event itself.

The e-mail offered council members and department heads two tickets for an event scheduled for Sept. 26 and asked them to reply “by the end of the day if possible.”

The e-mail gave no time or location, but Councilman Dale Ragan said the event would be at 7:30 p.m. at McIntyre Hall. The box office at McIntyre Hall would not confirm the event.
